An eight person crew lead by Earthship creator Michael Reynolds made a five day journey to Little Andaman Island off the coast of India in the Bay of Bengal to work with the local people building a demonstration structure using Earthship techniques. Here is Michael Reynolds' description of the building... "We built a prototype room with water harvesting roof and cistern below. Every shelter / room will catch and store 2000 gallons of water. We also evolved our contained sewage treatment system for the tropical climate resulting in year round landscaping during the dry months without the need for fresh water. The double roof and enhanced convection air circulation will keep the spaces cool without the need for fans. Power is provided by solar panels very easily as water and air conditioning demands are met with natural phenomenon resulting in a lower demand for electricity. This together with the structures being built from massive earth rammed tires, plastic and glass bottles and aluminum cans all "indigenous" to the area make for a very sculptural and beautiful building method with little or no outside utility needs."
