The documentation

under "custom icons" points out the importance of url encoding
In your link I can see
   ... markers=icon:http://maps.croydon. ...
note the : after the http

Maybe it is properly encoded in your webpage, and its just the group's
posting that has messed up, but can't tell as you haven't given a link
to your webpage.
