map should be a global variable. So it should be declared globally at
the beginning of your script (outside of any function):

var map; // declared globally as 'undefined'

Then you can use it inside of any other function like you do in the
function initialize()

map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById('map_canvas'),

If you don't do that the browser has to parse the whole available
script code to find a variable by that name before a global variable
will be created.
