2) The standard marker is a lightweight object with no image element
but a DIV with background image. It is not possible to scale a
background image. However it is quite simple to compose a custom
marker using OverlayView. See Pamela's example from demo gallery.
http://gmaps-samples-v3.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/overlayview/custommarker.html

3) I don't see anybody requesting that in the issue tracker
http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-issues/issues/list?q=apitype:Javascript3
I would recommend using one of the many third party tab scripts
available out there.

4) Custom map types were just introduced. See the documentation. It
doesn't take very many lines to get Google's traffic tiles on a v3
map.
