As per the Issue Tracker for the Google Cloud getting-started-java 
tutorial, it seem this is a known issue 
<https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/getting-started-java/issues/294>. 
The solution as per the Spring Boot Issue Tracker  
<https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/7479>is to add 
*<optional>true</optional> 
*to your 'org.springframework.boot' dependency.
