Documentaion say's : "An Expando instance's dynamic (non-fixed) properties can be deleted."
So I assume a fixed on can not be deleted. it's not really clear. Did you check if the prop was None on app engine too ? Maybe it is there as well and that a composite index can not be create with a None value, thus the 0 bytes index.
