Long-term sustainability means that the price model must be sustainable for both customers and for Google. If the price model is too expensive for customers, they will abandon GAE. And since the price of computing power gets divided by two each year, then it's likely that the current GAE price model is too expensive since it's already like two or three years old. Of course, the raw computing, storage and communication cost probably only is a fraction of the overall GAE cost, but as the platform matures, then the service cost for that too will go down.
