To add to Jamie's comment, I think that there are a lot of people who don't strictly need the channel API, but could use it for lots of new and innovative features/apps if given the choice. I know that I would build a lot of apps with the channel API which could really showcase GAE's utility.
Server push is hard to implement anywhere, but Google has implemented it successfully. If Google puts it in their platform, I believe it can be a marquee feature for them and can unlock a whole new class and quality of apps on the web.
