After installing by easy_install and trying in python console to
import PIL:
>>> import PIL
I get:
ImportError: No module named PIL.

The problem is in wrong organisation of EGG. Diretory of PIL in site-
packages dir (usually PIL-1.1.7-py2.6-linux-i686.egg) must not contain
files as is after easy_install of PIL, but there must be directory
named PIL and in that directory should be files of PIL:
site-packages/PIL-1.1.7-py2.6-linux-i686.egg/PIL/*

[PIL-1.1.7-py2.6-linux-i686.egg]#  ls
EGG-INFO
PIL
