        On my (likely to be as unrepresentative) 100 MB test file on
Linux, I get 5 secs versus 75 secs, still a non-negligible 
speedup.

        The article was saying Perl was twice as slow? Seems
it's 7.5 times as fast while needing a hundreth of the lines of
code. 

        Hmm... Make me want to rush back at my Java books, this
sure doesn't...
