But it does, and the test program is sound, so it must be right.

Incredibly. This has been a flea in my ear many times.
In my Somersaulting camel program at:

I used "sleep!$%" instead of "sleep 1" to save quite a
few strokes, because !$% does not require sightly encoding,
while " 1" sightly encodes to: ('{'^'[').('^'^('`'|'/')).
