If you were to contribute to a project that uses a license that doesn't disclaim liability, your contributions would also fall under the same terms. In other words, if someone decided that they were harmed by your code (e.g. because you made a coding mistake which corrupted their files) they could sue you. Since you didn't disclaim liability, they could win and you would have to pay them money. For code that you gave them for free. I'm guessing you wouldn't want to expose yourself to such liability.
