It's not listed anywhere official but I estimate 512mb per core on 32 bit 
systems and closer to 768 per core on 64 bit systems. You'll also need some 
additional memory for the other processes on your system while the build runs. 

If your virtual machine provider has turned off swap in your vm that would 
easily explain what you see as Linux becomes very conservative about memory 
allocations when swap is not available.
