As a bit of a fractal UI pioneer (see FracZooms and related), my quick suggestion is to allow for drawing of a outline style box(i.e. edge only) with mouse or finger. Leave outline in place until user either draws another, or indicates desire to zoom on selection. Then zoom to the extent of the box. Wash, rinse, repeat. As it stands now the interface for zooming doesn't seem intuitive. But your goal is right on the money!!
