Huh? You don't have preferences now, but will add some for this feature? Unless you generated your key with PGP 2.6 umpteen years ago, you have preferences. GPG can't magically infer what algorithms you want. If it isn't on the preference list, GPG won't use it. All this new feature does is try and be a bit more graceful with which algorithm it picks from the list.
