I just remembered a few things that might be relevant. 1) Google for "Barry Schwartz: The paradox of choice", there's a video where the guy explains that having too much choice is discouraging, especially if the one who has to make all these choices is not informed well enough to make these choices...well...informed. 2) Gabe Zichermann in one of his gamification talks mentioned that people are more creative when working in confined systems.
