xls stores only binary numbers. You will not be able to store long doubles.
xlsx leaves pointer->output.decimal_digits as -1 and gets shortest representation. Comment out 1483 in xml-sax-write.c and you ought to get the same. Note: this will break a lot of tests that will suddenly see unexpected changes!
