Flip side of the question is in that what is the harm in keeping them around? While it introduces some confusion but is there any additional ones?

And there’s an old bug, https://bugs.gnucash.org/show_bug.cgi?id=569735, about GnuCash creating a series of template root accounts. Since David has been around a while I guess they’re left overs from that. Note Mike Alexander’s comment 1 about his fix for them. If all of your current SXes were created after that then you can safely remove the old ones. Simon Arlott attached to the bug a python script to clean up the excess root accounts in an XML file, though it might need some work unless you happen to have a Python2 installation handy.
