When I worked with Simply Accounting it was possible to see a list of

I assume this must be possible with Gnucash, and when I go to *Tools *I do
see a *General Journal*, but it opens at the current date, without
offering any information.
Am I missing something obvious?
You are missing something, but it is perhaps not obvious.
In the "View" menu, there is a "Filter by…" entry. Select this entry,
and a "Filter General Journal by…" dialogue appears. It has a "Date"
tab. One of the options is "Show number of days", with a text field
containing "30". Try clicking the "Show All" option instead. Then click
OK to leave the dialogue. Now you should see all transactions in the
General Journal. For me, it is over 26 years of transactions.
