Sherlock, thank you. But I do not find any of these environment variables on my
macbook pro:
echo $USER_DATA_HOME $GNC_DATA_HOME $GTK_DATA_HOME $USER_CONFIG_HOME
$GNC_CONFIG_HOME $GTK_CONFIG_HOME $DOT_GNUCASH_DIR
If it is a configuration issue and not my own data file, is there a way
I could freshly uninstall and reinstall GnuCash? Would that be the way
to do it?

I suspect there may be a configuration issue.
A quick check is to rename the GNC_CONFIG_HOME directory and the try
launching GnuCash:
mv ~/Library/Application\ Support/Gnucash ~/Library/Application\
Support/Gnucash.sav
If GnuCash able to launch successfully, you can try restoring a backup of the
GNC_CONFIG_HOME directory saved before you experienced the issue.
