The idea is that there are four weighted date ranges:

an exact match                                    +3
within the likely match                           +2
between the likely match and the unlikely match    0
outside the unlikely match                        -5

When the "unlikely match" is less than the "likely match", the range between the "likely match" and the "unlikely match" is eliminated and any transactions outside the "likely match" are penalized - making the much less likely to be considered a match.
