This is a MUCH more global problem than just gnucash data.

You didn't say what OS, but regardless there should be one directory (file folder) with all the user data for each user able to log in (remember, one human can be several different users as far as the computer is concerned -- often at least two, the "administrator" and one "ordinary user".

Ideally, after the factory reset you recreated log ins, hopefully using the same NAME as before (could be a new/different password). In that case just replace the new user directory with the old one on the backup. Then that will be all of your user data in one fell swoop.
