Heide, I just checked and discovered that I did 23 updates going from 4.8 to Gnucash Arm-5.10-1. However, I would be very surprised if you have any problems going directly between them.
As noted by Brad, the FAQ could be clearer but the main point is that you can always upgrade to a higher numbered release. If there were a lot of major versions in between, you would probably need to do them one major version at a time, e.g 2.x to 3.x, then 3.x to 4.x etc. Since you are talking about just one major version newer, 4.x to 5.x, you will have no problem. It is always a good idea to back up your data before making any major change. I always just rely on the automatic backups that Gnucash creates. There is one for most every day of the past month, probably every time I made a change to something.
