Alas, this is a very common problem for newish users. This mailing list
mentions this same problem frequently.

The most likely cause is that you have shutdown your computer with
Gnucash still open.

There is no need for any panic. Nothing has happened to your data.

explains every possibility.

Just open your file from within Gnucash, and choose open anyway. You
have already said no one else is using the file.

Next time you email this list, please add your OS and version of
Gnucash.
