I haven't tried that from within the GnuCash program for ages and ages. I
just tried it now starting within the release 4.8 version. It immediately,
without a confirmation step, closed the currently open file then started
the new file dialog. I have not tried it from release 5.10 yet to see what
happens in that release. I am surprised that there was no confirmation
step, just in case it was the cat that started the process.

You might tell us your GnuCash release and OS since that might make a
difference.
