Kathleen, Y ou did not mention which version of GnuCash you are using or your computer's operating system. Sometimes that makes a difference.
In any case, a little trick that recentlyI learned is to click on File, then hover the curser over the names of the recently used filenames. The full path and filename appear in the bottom of the window. This will tell you where those files are located so that you can see which ones you have recently used and where they are located.
