I’m encountering the same behaviour as Paul, and I can confirm this remains
present in GnuCash version 5.10.

The issue is identical and can be replicated by creating a new book, adding
some accounts, then adding some account codes (that differ from alphabetical
order).

Opening a multicolumn balance sheet or profit and loss will show the correct
account code sort order on first open. However the report will then revert to
alphabetical sorting immediately after changing any date options. It will then
remain sorted alphabetically and it does not appear possible to revert to sort
by account code.

I’ve searched bugs.gnucash.org and can't seem to locate a bug report for this -
has one been submitted? Thanks.
