Yes, that doesn't look right. It's not clear - is image 1 from the VT
account? It doesn't look right - stock account should have Shares, Price,
Buy, and Sell Columns ("Buy" and "Sell" will be "Debit" and "Credit" if you
are using formal account labels). Image 1 seems to have shares, and price,
and balance? Maybe it's cut off and the third column is the "Buy" (Debit)
column?

When you do a purchase of VT, the number of shares should INCREASE, and the
cash in USD Cash should DECREASE.

The purchase should be entered in the VT account with the "other" account
of USD Cash, and it should have the shares you purchased, and the amount
that was spent. I'm not sure why it isn't showing it.  I don't have GnuCash
showing amounts in fractions, as you do, but that shouldn't have anything
to do with it.

I can't quite see what's going on from those images.
