Well, since you are new to this.

SOME of us would be entering a transaction in the account "checking" every time we cut a check or initiate a transfer. The statement from the back would be used in the reconcile process, the dates there when cleared back at the bank, what has cleared and what's still outstanding, transactions the bank has that you don't, etc.

If you JUST enter what the bank has:

1) how do you spot that a check you wrote has not yet been deposited/cashed?

2) how do you know that somebody has snuck a small monthly automatic payment onto your account
