Balance: total of all positive and negative transactions in the book, without rollup from any subaccounts, equal to the account balance Total: total of all positive and negative transactions in the book, with rollup from any subaccounts to their parent accounts, equal to the total balance for this account and its subaccounts Balance(Period): total of all positive and negative transactions in the book for the current accounting period,(*) without rollup from any subaccounts, equal to the change in balance for the current period Total(Period): total of all positive and negative transactions in the book for the current accounting period,(*) with rollup from any subaccounts, equal to the total change in balance for the current period for this account and its subaccounts (*) You set the accounting period in Edit » Preferences » Accounting Period. My guess is that you are still in your first accounting period, so "evereything from the beginning of time" and "just the current accounting period" are the same. They will be different once you are inyto your second accouinting period.
