I searched on the internet and played around with my systems and discovered that just running "flatpak update" does not remove previous versions of GnuCash that were installed from flathub.
See attachment flatpak_list_xubuntu.

If I remove the older GnuCash packages first, I don't get the message telling me the GNOME 44 runtime is no longer supported.  I am also not asked to install the required runtime (runtime/org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/46) found in remote flathub.

To remove older GnuCash packes run:

$ flatpak uninstall <app ID>  (where app ID in this case is org.gnucash.GnuCash.)

The GNOME software plugin removes the older version, but just running "flatpak update' does not.  This is from an older Ubuntu 20.04.  I have been running flatpak on this since 2020 just using the GNOME software plugin to update flatpak apps.
