You're on a Linux platform so it won't directly matter, but be aware that
the Windows 5.5 version has a major bug (many reports don't work). It's
fixed in 5.5.1 and 5.6, so if you ever share your data files into the
Windows universe, it's unlikely it would be to 5.5.

That said, I'm not aware any data file format changes within 5.x, so sending
data files from Linux 5.5 to Windows 5.6 should work regardless.

Subject: [GNC] Moving from GnuCash 4.8 to GnuCash 5.5 - any issues likely to
bite me?

https://github.com/Gnucash/gnucash/releases describes the release changes
but your question is obviously about understanding the practical impact from
a user's perspective. I note lots of Gremlins reported in the mailing list
about V5.

https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-user/2024-April/111721.html
seems relevant (no data file changes confirmed by lead developed), GnuCash
V4.14 being the last V4 release. Using the same data file with V4.14 or
V5.6 seems a low risk upgrade path as long as you are not running custom
reports.
