I believe John is correct... GnuCash gives the option to do a true delete (presumably for the case of an import error, as in the case of the OP).
When I first saw the OP, I wondered why anyone would ever want to delete an account and all the transactions, but if an import messed up, and the plan is to re-do it, it makes sense.
