Many years ago I wrote some finite difference code https://atlc.sourceforge.net/ Once a publisher asked me if they could include a copy of the code on a CD with a book they were going to publish on modelling of electromagnetic systems. My reply was "sure, it's released under the GPL, just use it". But that did not satisfy them. *They wanted it confirmed in writing that they could use the code.* I could hardly be bothered to send a letter to them, but agreed with them that I would write a letter if they would send me a copy of the book when it was published. They agreed to that, so I confirmed in writing that they could include this GPL code with the book.
