There is a description of how to do this in the help. Basically, grab the right edge of the account column header and move it either way to the desired width, then grab the right edge of the description column header and move it left far enough to eliminate the horizontal scroll bar.
You can start by double clicking the category header, and if that makes the account column too wide, grab the right edge an move it left as desired. In the next software release there will be a fix so all the column widths will be remembered when the register is closed. Currently sometimes they are not.
