If there are schema files in both locations (not necessarily gnucash related), a gnucash installed from a deb package will not find its schema files in the former location and hence settings will not work.

The first path has lots of xml-files and a few others.

The second path does not exist.

echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS

gives:

/usr/share/gnome:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/

But there isn't a glib-2.0 directory in /usr/share/gnome, either.
