Absolutely consult a tax accountant, because both Federal and State
jurisdictions involved, and these might differ (now you have a real
accounting mess). But first, Alan, you might search out the sites that
describe the rules (for example the IRS site) as you might decide that
gives you enough information to do it yourself*. SOMETIMES they make the
rules clear and easy to follow.
This isn't a gnucash question (since the accounting question is the same
no matter what application were used, even the old fashioned pen and ink

* for example --- Alan, do you know if as an owner operator you would be
considered "self employed" (an independent contractor as opposed to an
employee) and do you know what the IRS considers the maximum allowance,
and do you file the necessary expense reports with the employer, etc. Or
is crossing the border involved? << like shortcut across southern Ontario >>
The point is, didn't take me long to learn what questions I would
need answers to before talking to that accountant
