As Adrien pointed out anytime you do an upgrade of GNuCash you should ALWAYS make a backup copy of the data file before starting the upgrade and keep it at least until everything is working. It is a good practice to regularly make a backup copy of your data file in any case, preferrably to another computer, network storage or a cloud (online) storage, usb stick etc.
Whenever you are upgrading ANY application you should make a back-up of the user data of that application (immediately before the upgrade).
This is in addition to the regular periodic back-ups you are making (unless you always to choose to do all application upgrades immediately after the regular periodic back-up). You ARE doing periodic back-ups of your user data, yes?
In other words, the advice how to do it for gnucash is not specific to gnucash.
