David, That was likely my bad. I rewrote the Importer documentation a couple of years ago after Geert had completed a major rewrite of the CSV importer and importer code in general. I was working primarily from experimentation with the program and only a passing acquaintance with some areas of the code. Unfortunately I don't make a lot of use of the CSV importer these days as most of my imports are now OFX. I have been sidetracked on some physics work over the past few years and haven't revisited it recently. The working of the append feature at that time wasn't very clear to me but there has been a bit of discussion in the mailing list I can possibly draw on. I will try to make some time to search out any recent changes in the append behaviour and update the docs and relook at the use of category in that context. It may be useful to reference it explicitly to the use of categories in other programs users may be importing data from, and again point out explicitly that categories in other programs map onto accounts in Gnucash. Most people importing from Quicken are unlikely to use CSV though.
