I'm having what I thought was a similar problem. In my case it turned
out to be an issue with Dropbox in macOS 12.3. I keep my Gnucash data
in a shared directory on Dropbox because I sometimes run it on both
Linux and macOS. The syncing is pretty much broken right now. The
files are there on the Mac, but they're all 0 bytes.

If it were just a single file I could tell it to store it locally, but
since I have the whole log there I don't trust it to work. I'll just
work with it on Linux until they get it fixed.
