This is the wiki article Adrien was referring to

configuration locations for each OS type (Windows Mac , Linux)  About halway
down the page there are some links to diagrams

locations diagrammatically  for the three OS os's which may be a bit easier to
follow as the description in the wikiuses pseudo environment variable
definitiions.
