Unfortunately I don't think so, but there are 2 other options:
There is Preferences > Register Defaults which sets a hard limit by number of transactions, but I can't see how that is as useful as applying a filter across the board. While filters have an indicator in each register (top right corner), this preference does not, and you might one day forget why you can only see say, 50 transactions.
There is also Tools > General Journal, which shows transactions from all accounts but only for the last 30 days.
Personally I use the filters similar to a search when I'm trying to clean up an account, or refactor account splits. But once that task is completed, I turn off the filter. I can't think of too many cases where I might want to hide transactions from my view.

Thank to Adrien, I now realize I can limit the amount of transactions displayed for an account. Is there a way to do this globally for all accounts without having to change each and every account? I looked but don't see a way.
