I would suspect that most of us have never had a return of capital and we would not know how to record such a transaction in GnuCash. I myself have recently purchased a fund that pays a dividend, but they say wait until the end of the year to get a report of how much was capital gains and how much was return of capital. I have not yet learned how to enter a return of capital in GnuCash....
