I run the up to date versions on Ubuntu using flatpak which is kept updated with the latest version - see https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Flatpak for details. I think it runs ok on Mint linux also and there's no need to compile anything, just run a "flatpak update" now and again to update to any new version available - so easy :-)
