My recollection is that I just installed over the top without
uninstalling first.
Out of curiosity I installed 3.4 on a clean Windows machine, then
installed 4.1 (without uninstalling first) and the installer gave me the
option to uninstall the old version first, or it would uninstall it for
me - see attached screenshot.
I guess this rules out simultaneous versions, at least on Windows.
