Well, yes, but it’s the old copies of the files that one would want to examine. 
I guess I could open those and resave them uncompressed, but I’d be concerned 
that GnuCash would do the same transmogrification that we’re trying to track 
down. Thus an independent decompression would definitely be better.

Anyway, the more I think about it, the more I think I did this myself and have 
totally forgotten about it. If I still drank, I could blame that, but I’m 
afraid it’s just the effects of impending senility.

No need for 7-Zip or any such decompression program, just go to Preferences >> 
General and uncheck the compress files option and save the file to save it as 
uncompressed....
