The reporting mechanism is a bit ‘obtuse’ to put it mildly with respect to custom reports. Eventually, when GnuCash is a proper database application, this will change. In the meantime, you also have an option, if you are using one of the database backends, to use something like PieCash which can parse the data and allow you to write your own reports using more friendly tools than the default reporting system. Do a web search or specifically a search here on the list for threads about it with links.
