You neglected to mention the platform. If it's Mac or Windows, yes, just 
install it over the existing one. On Mac you can even rename one of them and 
install them next to each other or put them in separate directories. On Windows 
the installer will take care of removing the old one for you after asking 
permission to do so.

Non-mac Unix is another matter: Our downloads are source tarballs that you have 
to build before you can install. Unless you're comfortable around compilers and 
build systems it's best to wait for your distro to provide the upgrade.
