John, I seem to have misunderstood. I thought you said you were only trying to store the data file on the flash drive; this sounds like you are trying to store the entire application there. Storing the data file is trivial, but trying to load the entire application is another story. Since I am not a Linux guy, I will defer to the comments made here by the others about the difficulties of running an application from removable storage.
Gnucash on my mac takes a total of about 175Mb of space. Surely that could fit in the limited space available to you? If that is still a stretch, you can probably delete some of the different language help files; the Japanese docs especially eat up a lot of space. So I really don't have a lot of room to play with. Sort of a throwback to the days when everything we ran was stored on floppy drives and either a very small hard drive or no hard drive at all. John, be aware that GnuCash always tries to load the last file it had open; if the folder isn't available when you fire it up, you will receive an error. Just be sure the USB stick is inserted and mounted before you start GC, and you should be fine. That is based on Debian Linux. It worked, but it was somewhat clumsy. The nice thing is that all the data is completely encrypted and insulated from intruders, "sandboxed" if you will.
