No. Maint will get one last release in a few days and then be renamed to 2.6 
and archived.

No. See above, plus read the first line under the heading: "To build Gnucash 
2.8 from source you need to install following packages:”.

Either wait until 3.0 is released, at which point the current unstable will be 
renamed maint, or build unstable until then. We’re not going to add new strings 
to 2.6 this late in the game. We’re also in string freeze now on unstable, so 
won’t merge any new TotD items until after releasing 3.0.
